I’m watching the protests at Seattle AI Week and the City Council’s moratorium on data centers with a mix of frustration and exhaustion. As a Cloud Architect, I deal with the physics of compute every day. You can’t demand instantaneous AI services and lower latency while blocking the literal infrastructure that makes it possible.
It’s logically inconsistent to complain about 'Big Tech' while relying on their stack for every facet of modern life. The argument that data centers are 'draining' our grid ignores the fact that these facilities are actually the biggest drivers for new green energy investment. If we push them out of Washington, they’ll just land in states with coal-heavy grids where environmental oversight is a joke.
Protesters in kayaks on Elliott Bay make for a great photo op, but they aren't offering a viable architectural alternative. We’re at a point where compute is as essential as water or electricity. Blocking local builds doesn't stop the AI transition; it just exports the economic benefits while we keep consuming the product. It’s peak Seattle NIMBYism, and it’s going to cost us our competitive edge.
