As we gear up for the 250th anniversary of our nation's independence, it's disheartening to see extreme heat and wildfires casting a shadow over the festivities. The Cottonwood Fire in Utah has already scorched over 112 square miles, leading to a state of emergency and restrictions on fireworks. Additionally, the Department of Energy has declared an emergency for the PJM Interconnection, the nation's largest power grid, due to soaring demand amid the heatwave.
While celebrating our nation's history is important, we must prioritize safety and environmental responsibility. Perhaps it's time to rethink how we commemorate this day, focusing on community and resilience rather than activities that could exacerbate these challenges.
